GILGAMESH and ENKIDU travel according to a FORMULA.
They walk FIFTY LEAGUES in a day, then dig a well, make offerings
so SHAMASH will send them dreams, and go to sleep. Every night
GILGAMESH has a DREAM.
GILGAMESH
So, I had this strange dream…
ENKIDU
You did ask for dreams.
GILGAMESH
Yes, but I had disturbing dreams. I dreamt a mountain fell
on us, and that I wrestled with a bull and the heavens roared…
ENKIDU
I was probably initiated into the cult of Ishtar so I would
be granted the power to interpret your dreams like all the
other women in this epic but I can’t be sure. Anyway, I
say those dreams are good! They mean that Shamash is with
us and we’ll kill Humbaba.
GILGAMESH
I thought it was because I’m supposed to love you like a
wife and a woman.
ENKIDU
That too.
GILGAMESH and ENKIDU arrive at the FOREST.
SHAMASH
Hurry up and go in! Humbaba hasn’t put on all his armor
yet!
ENKIDU
I’m scared! I won’t go!
GILGAMESH
What, again? We’ve got to go in, safety in numbers you know.
ENKIDU
Uh-uh. Knees are knocking, not going in.
GILGAMESH
Oh come on, you pansy!
THEY fight. Humbaba hears them and BELLOWS.
HUMBABA
You kids stop making noise! And get off my lawn.
ENKIDU
Let’s do like the Guardian of the Forest says.
GILGAMESH
We’ve come all this way. We can’t turn back now. We’ll be
famous if we do this.
ENKIDU
We’re already famous.
GILGAMESH
We’ll be more famous. Trust me. You’re a mighty warrior!
The two of us can take him.
ENKIDU
